The City-Port Interface: A Resource for Diverse Development Projects
Revising the status of port and City Port heritage to properly reflect the site’s historical significance.
How can the historical character be maintained in Port-City interface zone redevelopments?
Port cities have a shared identity that sets them apart from other cities. Yet each port city also draws on its history to forge its distinct identity. By including symbolic port installations (rails, cranes, containers, etc.) in urban planning and architectural projects and referencing port-related terminology in the choice of materials, colours, and elements, project stakeholders can preserve and capitalise on this dual territorial identity. A way of achieving this character is by implementing a masterplan for desired areas or incentivising new developments to design with this mindset. Stockholm took this approach, where a new housing development follows the port aesthetic.
The “Kvarteret Amsterdam” project, designed by White Arkitekter in partnership with developer Midroc, clearly refers to the site’s industrial and port history. It is a residential development project located in the Royal Seaport district of Stockholm. The three buildings that make up this development are inspired by warehouses and silos, with brick arches and frontages that affirm the district’s strong identity. That identity is also reflected in the importance attached to the sense of local community. Various social spaces are planned, including an internal courtyard by Karavan Landskap and roof terraces. Energy efficiency has also been optimised with the plan to install solar panels and green roofs. The project is located in the southern part of Värtahamnen and will be in the heart of the Stockholm Royal Seaport, the vast redevelopment programme currently underway, which is due for completion in 2030.
