Oslo (Norway): An aesthetic port

An essential aspect of the evolving dynamic between the city and the port is a type of spatial disconnection, marking the conclusion of the long-standing mutually beneficial association. Promenades can invigorate the waterfront and reestablish the link between the city and its port. The integration of promenade pathways into port and city initiatives serves as a dual-purpose approach: rejuvenating recently repurposed areas and presenting fresh visual angles of both the city and the port. In the case of Oslo, it developed the Fjord City urban renewal project to redistribute the centre of the city and to be closer to the port by preserving heritage structures. This preservation project also demanded the redevelopment of the whole promenade by creating guidelines for the aesthetics the waterfront needs to convey. A prime example of that is the Rådhusbrygge 2, which was awarded “Best Outdoor Urban Space” in 2019.

This good practice also includes objective 6.2 (Integrating spaces and functions open to residents and visitors alike into port facilities, enhancing the visibility of the port and its activities) of the AIVP’s Agenda 2030.
