How can the port city interface become a mixed-use financial and touristic asset accessible to a variety of stakeholders?
The international draw of many port cities can be measured in terms of the increase in cruise business and sea-based tourist activities. These activities’ economic and cultural impact is significant, generating added value for cities and ports. Besides boating, there is an opportunity to structure an entire sector around sailing, creating direct jobs in the port area with positive repercussions for small businesses operating in the sailing industry and those in the hotel, catering and retail trades, both locally and regionally. Port Vell in Barcelona is home to a Nautic Cluster in a public-private model, turning leisure sailing and yachting into a financial and tourism asset for the city and the port.
This good practice also includes objective 9.5 (Regulating cruise ship stop overs based on the port city’s capacity, without compromising the equilibrium and appeal of the local area) of the AIVP’s 2030 Agenda.
Barcelona Clúster Nàutic, officially launched at the AIVP Days in 2012, aims to leverage the city's maritime potential, uniting industry, businesses, and research centres to boost economic growth. Located at Port Vell, the complex brings together nearly ninety members, including the Town Hall, Port of Barcelona, and universities, creating an attractive framework for investors. With marinas, repair and refitting of mega yachts, specialist training in boat handling, regattas and top-level competitions, there is now a global offer in a single location, generating scale economies and promoting innovation while contributing to job creation and social cohesion. It embodies the mix of urban life with maritime activities at Barcelona's Port Vell, fostering cultural, economic, and sporting endeavours. The cluster seeks to propel the nautical industry, foreseeing substantial economic and communal advantages for the city and its surroundings.
