A New Transportation System to Connect the City and the Port
A New Transportation System to Connect the City and the Port
Reducing the negative impacts of periods of peak activity in the City Port territory by any means possible.
How can port-city connectivity be improved while reducing nuisances for the public?
Integrating port-city territories with the urban structure is essential for the growth and development of cities. To achieve this, extending existing infrastructure, such as roads and rails, to these areas is crucial. However, it is equally important to create new types of connections, including pedestrian access, bicycle paths, tramways, and buses, to end the physical isolation of these sites. By improving the existing grid, we can prevent overloading the city’s traffic, creating a smoother and more efficient transportation system for the inhabitants as well as for port traffic. In Miami, for example, a tunnel was constructed to remove trucks from the city’s centre, significantly reducing traffic congestion for all parties.
In 2009, about 16,000 vehicles travelled through downtown streets each weekday, going to and from the port of Miami (up to 28% of these vehicles were trucks). To improve the connection and ease traffic congestion, a tunnel was constructed in 2010 and inaugurated in 2014. The tunnel directly links two highways, the cargo and cruise ship ports on Dodge Island, and opens the way for new developments in the northern part of Miami's business district (CBD). The waterfront of Dodge Island also benefits from the development. The tunnel was built by a public-private partnership between the State of Florida, the Miami Access Tunnel (MAT) Consortium, on behalf of the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), Miami-Dade County, and the city of Miami.
