Let's build the green port of the future together

Launched in October 2021 and scheduled to run through September 2026, the project brings together 45 partners, including the ports of Rotterdam (Netherlands), HAROPA (France), Sines (Portugal), and DeltaPort (Germany).

Together, the project partners aim to facilitate the supply and deployment of clean energy in port operations. Ten pilot projects are currently underway, and their results will contribute to the development of a roadmap for greener and more sustainable European ports, to be submitted to the European Commission.

 

The MAGPIE project (sMArt Green Ports as Integrated Efficient Multimodal Hubs) is paving the way for European ports to become sustainable, carbon-neutral, and multimodal hubs.

Objectives

The Objectives of the MAGPIE Project

The MAGPIE project aims to transform European ports into hubs for sustainable and interconnected transportation. To this end, it combines real-world demonstrations with impact studies to, in the medium term, integrate green energy sources and automate transportation within port operations. The goal is to accelerate the energy transition in maritime and land-based logistics chains, while aligning with the ambitions of the European Green Deal.

The project is divided into ten “Work Packages”

  • WP1: Project management and coordination.
  • WP2: Communication, Stakeholder Engagement, and Dissemination of Results. This is the working group for which AIVP is responsible within the project.
  • WP3: Analysis of energy needs, with a focus on carbon-free energy sources.
  • WP4: Digital innovations (digital twin of the port, planning tools).
  • WP5: Maritime transport (ammonia demonstrators, at-sea electric refueling, autonomous barges).
  • WP6: Decarbonization of land transportation (electrification of semi-trailers, hybrid locomotives).
  • WP7: Non-technical measures to support innovation.
  • WP8: Environmental monitoring and impact assessment.
  • WP9: Compilation of Results and Development of a Plan for European Green Ports
  • WP10: Cooperation with other projects.

AIVP also supports WP 8 and 9.

90% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions

Through MAGPIE, the consortium is also committed to reducing air, noise, and visual pollution in port areas, involving local stakeholders through shared governance, and strengthening the competitiveness of European ports to promote sustainable investment. This project supports the European goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the transportation sector by 90% by 2050.

AIVP’s Role in the Project

Why is AIVP a partner in the project?

As the consortium’s facilitator, AIVP coordinates the partners’ involvement and ensures that the results are disseminated to MAGPIE project members, its own network, European institutions, and the general public.

As an international player in the city-port dialogue, AIVP brings its expertise in regional and societal issues, linking infrastructure, public policy, and the needs of citizens. Its involvement reflects its commitment to the sustainable transition of port cities. Above all, AIVP supports HAROPA, a long-standing member of its network, which is involved in the project. We remain close to our members and support them in the projects that are important to them.

Our Key Initiatives

  • Organization of participatory workshops bringing together ports, local governments, businesses, and NGOs.
  • Distribution of deliverables and prototypes through our networks.
  • Contributing our expertise on the city-port environment to monitor the project’s impact and its vision for the ports of the future.
  • Production of popular science content (articles, newsletters, videos).
  • Organization of an exhibition on the project at the Port Center in Le Havre and at Portlantis in Rotterdam.
