The three focus areas were climate change adaptation, the energy transition, and the circular economy—and, of course, the city-port interface.
The final deliverable was submitted in December 2022. Calls for proposals will be issued in 2023 by APIOI to continue the work on feasibility and preliminary design.
This project received financial support from the French Development Agency (AFD), as part of its FEXTE program.
With the support of a team of experts from the AIVP network, a regional assessment was developed and refined during a site visit to several of the islands in this region. Recommendations were subsequently submitted to the APIOI so that a “roadmap for greening” could be drafted jointly.
Looking ahead, the focus has been on various green technologies, such as ocean thermal energy conversion, wave energy, and the recycling of biowaste. The ports of the Indian Ocean islands hold particularly strong potential in the energy sector.
Furthermore, these islands are vulnerable to rising sea levels, and it is up to us to take action now to prepare for this. Very concrete recommendations have been formulated with the help of AIVP experts to prepare fragile archipelagos such as the Comoros, the Seychelles, and Mauritius for the years 2050 and 2100.
Finally, the cultural significance of the ports in the region is undeniable, as each island is closely tied to its maritime history. That is why the “Port Center” concept was promoted during this mission.
