Strasbourg (France) Silos as new cultural spaces

Heritage is a complex concept which refers not just to the background of a building or site but also gives the port-city its place in history and identity. While renovating existing architecture and port heritage may cost more than building new constructions, it is important to consider the possibilities of enhancing the port city’s attractiveness and identity, providing a visible link between the past and present. Moreover, the redevelopment of an entire area can bring a sense of unity and community. This was the plan of Strasbourg when renovating three old grain silos at the Austerlitz port area. 

This good practice also includes objective 8.3 (Developing public spaces and recreational or cultural amenities in Port City interface zones to create an appealing new area) of the AIVP’s 2030 Agenda.
