What elements are required to offer the right education and training to meet the port city’s current and future needs?
It is important to adapt vocational training programmes to include the specific skills required by port-city activities. By working actively with stakeholders in research and education, ports and port industries can play a part in the development of specific training programmes. Their content needs to be regularly updated to reflect the needs of a constantly changing port economy. These training programs can be customised to meet the requirements of both technical and service-based industries. They can vary from short-term courses that cover specific skills to long-term programs that provide a more comprehensive education. In Singapore, the partnership of the Port and the University creates a unique laboratory for the students.
This good practice also includes objective 5.4 (Promoting interactions and projects between the City and Port and schools, training institutes and the professional world) of the AIVP’s 2030 Agenda.
Port of Singapore Authority (PSA) International and the Republic Polytechnic Institute officially launched the RP-PSA Experiential Lab on January 5, 2018. The laboratory has equipment capable of simulating operations at PSA’s existing terminals and will enable students to see the potential impacts of changes made in various scenarios. The initiative resulted from the Memorandum of Understanding signed between the two organisations in 2015 and is part of PSA’s efforts to promote awareness of the wide range of potential port careers. It reflects the company’s commitment to attracting new talent for the next generation of smart terminals. It acts as a training laboratory to showcase the port’s operations of the future. It incorporates port operations through port elements such as wall murals, container handling resources, materials, and a berthing chart to facilitate skills-based learning. The lab allows students to experience the curriculum realistically in the lab based on port operations scenarios.
