How to redesign the waterfront to reduce the port’s expansion into the city and increase permeability?
Collaborative utilization of the waterfront can be organized following a comprehensive assessment of existing port facilities and urban features, considering their roles and whether they’re utilized. In the case of the massive port city of Istanbul, the port authority and Beyoglu neighbourhood created the new Galata port that combined both the extension of the recreation and market area for the local community and tourists with the main port for cruise ships, where the boarding and disembarkation would take place in a spacious underground area without blocking the sidewalk. This is to separate activities of recreation and travelling with a cruise ship, which helps a densely populated city such as Istanbul.
This good practice also includes objectives 6.1 (Developing all types of promenades and other open spaces in City Port interface zones, to promote a better understanding of port and logistic activities) and 8.1 (Incorporating measures designed to reduce port nuisances into building design) of the AIVP’s 2030 Agenda.
In 2005, an exhaustive survey was made of the various uses made of the waterfront (port-related activities, leisure/recreational, sports, etc.) and the facilities involved. Based on this survey, the different uses made of the waterfront were modelled in terms of time (i.e., at what time? by whom? which activities?), and in terms of space (where?, for what kind of land uses?). The model was used to design a new strategy for the use of dock basins, based on time sharing and space sharing between the different types of activities. This also led to the relocation of some of the activities.
