Marseilles (France): Port infrastructures are used to improve the marine environment

Goal 10.5

Encouraging programmes aimed at restoring and developing biodiversity in the City Port territory.

Challenge(s)

How to work together with stakeholders to protect biodiversity?

Best Practice

Port infrastructures and activities can cause irreversible damage to seabeds and contribute to the disappearance of fauna and flora. This biodiversity can be restored and preserved by considering the environmental footprint and ecological engineering and eco-design measures for port infrastructures. Modifying existing infrastructure or building new facilities is important to protect ecosystems from the harmful effects of port and industrial activities. In Marseille, pilot projects bring stakeholders together to develop the port areas’ biodiversity.
