La Rochelle (France): Increasing the visibility of port-related professions

Goal 5.0

Investing in human capital and developing port cities in a way that provides residents, young talents, professionals and entrepreneurs with the jobs needed for their own personal development and for the competitiveness of the port community.

Goal 5.1

Mobilising public and private stakeholders in port sectors to promote life-long professional training and personal development for the citizen.

Challenge(s)

How can synergies be developed between maritime stakeholders to improve the local economy?

Best Practice

Several practices can help increase the public’s knowledge and involvement with the port. One such practice is establishing a dedicated online platform for the port economy and employment. Providing a centralised hub for job seekers, recruiters, and educational institutions enhances visibility and accessibility to maritime opportunities. Additionally, organising events to facilitate direct engagement between stakeholders can lead to better alignment of business needs with local human resources, supporting the port’s economy. This is demonstrated by the Port of La Rochelle, where a platform fosters collaboration among maritime stakeholders and partners.

This good practice also includes objective 5.1 (Mobilising public and private stakeholders in port sectors to promote life-long professional training and personal development opportunities for citizens) of the AIVP’s 2030 Agenda.

Case Study

Port of La Rochelle has a website dedicated to the port economy and employment. The initiative was carried out in cooperation with Union Maritime, which gathered 38 port companies. The main goal is to give disclosure to port employment opportunities and facilitate the process for future applicants, promote all businesses in the port area, and organise a common process for recruiters, employment, and education stakeholders. The website is only one of the elements of the program “Cap sur l’économie portuaire” (Focus on the port economy), developed by the port and Union Maritime to increase the visibility of port-related professions. For instance, the organisation promoted the 2024 Maritime and River Trades Week, a career fair where people can discover professions and meet recruiting companies and training centres with more than 900 open positions. The program fosters local synergy by providing tailored responses to businesses, job seekers, students, and education stakeholders. It facilitates the matching of business needs with the area's human resources, including the orientation, employment, and education of young individuals.
