A New Transportation System to Connect the City and the Port
A New Transportation System to Connect the City and the Port
Reducing the negative impacts of periods of peak activity in the City Port territory by any means possible.
How to implement smart port-city solutions to combat traffic congestion?
The implementation of automated ticket gates, vehicle identification systems, and smart traffic management solutions can streamline passenger and vehicle flow. Real-time data analysis and collaboration with the city can optimise traffic light phases and introduce price incentives for off-peak truck traffic. The SmartPort project, initiated by the Port Authority in 2019, has been a resounding success in combating traffic congestion in Helsinki. This comprehensive initiative, which leverages technologies like artificial intelligence, Big Data, IoT solutions, and blockchains, has significantly enhanced port efficiency and sustainability. The project’s participation in domestic and international initiatives, such as Twin-Port, has further improved infrastructure and efficiency, with a strong focus on digital information sharing and environmental impact reduction.
This good practice also includes objective 4.3 (Guaranteeing transparent management of City Port regions and adopting open information systems) of the AIVP’s 2030 Agenda.
The Port Authority of Helsinki observed a surge in port activities, especially in the Helsinki-Tallinn ferry links, leading to congestion in the West Harbour terminals. Plans to accommodate 17,000 residents in Jätkäsaari were reevaluated as traffic and vessel sizes surpassed expectations. This prompted collaborative efforts between the City and Port to balance residents' quality of life with the competitiveness of port activities.
