Dublin (Ireland): Social media outreach and integration of port city participation

Goal 6.4

Providing, by any means, daily news and information on port and city life for residents, particularly young people and school students.

Challenge(s)

How to effectively communicate the port’s activities to the public ?

Best Practice

The effective communication of local events and developments by explaining the complexities of the port is vital to the long-term goal of increasing community engagement for future planning and in line with the UN SDGs. The Dublin Port Company (DPC) has developed a comprehensive Digital Work Plan to improve port city culture and identity. The plan aims to improve port city culture, through historical memories and community outreach, through the use of social media.

Case Study

Dublin Port is located in the city centre, in close vicinity of the new “smart district” in the docklands. To improve the integration of the port with the city and to educate citizens about the importance of the port, Dublin Port Company (DPC) launched a social media strategy in 2013. With the proposal of the first version of the Masterplan 2040 in 2012, it was agreed that a social media strategy should be integrated to guide the port city development to meet citizens’ demands and contribute to achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals. The DPC has continued its online engagement through their social media channels. The port’s communications department is actively organising events to better engage with the public in the future development of the port of Dublin and its relation to the city.
