Copenhagen (Denmark): Waterfront structures to encourage engagement with the port

Goal 8.3

Developing public spaces and recreational or cultural amenities in City Port interface zones to create an appealing new area.

Challenge(s)

How to create spaces to familiarise the public with the port?

Best Practice

To create spaces to familiarise the public with the port, cities can take cues from innovative projects like the Kalvebod Waves and the Harbour Bath in Copenhagen. These projects integrate waterfront infrastructure with public spaces, offering dynamic environments for recreation and interaction. By incorporating features like swimming facilities, sunbathing areas, and pedestrian promenades, cities can encourage community engagement and provide opportunities for people to connect with the waterfront. Such projects not only revitalise the port area but also promote a sense of belonging and appreciation for the surrounding environment, highlighting the transformative role of architecture in urban landscapes.

This good practice also includes objective 6.1 (Developing all types of promenades and other open spaces in City Port interface zones, to promote a better understanding of port and logistic activities) of the AIVP’s 2030 Agenda.
