A New Transportation System to Connect the City and the Port
Reducing the negative impacts of periods of peak activity in the City Port territory by any means possible.
How can port authorities create smoother communication and transportation between the port and the city?
One effective solution to the challenge posed is the establishment of a new road layout for the city and the port. This approach has proven successful in Buenos Aires with the completion of the ‘Paseo del Bajo’ in 2019. This project has significantly improved port competitiveness, reduced the environmental impact of port activities, and optimised the accessibility of port-city sites. It has facilitated the smooth movement of trucks and goods between the port, the city centre, and the hinterland while creating space for new and improved pedestrian and bicycle lanes.
This good practice also includes objective 8.1 (Incorporating measures designed to reduce port nuisances into building design) of the AIVP’s 2030 Agenda.
The "Paseo del Bajo" is a significant new highway constructed between the port and the city centre to better connect the incoming and outgoing resources from the port to the city. The highway was decided to be built in 2016 after an announcement by the chief of government of Buenos Aires, Horacio Rodriguez Larreta, and the minister of Urban Development and Transportation, Franco Moccia.
