How to create multi-purpose buildings on the waterfront?
The blend can take the form of a horizontal mix, involving a side-by-side arrangement of functions, or a vertical mix, incorporating both port and urban activities within a single location. Although the latter approach, which is still relatively uncommon, is especially suitable for passenger terminals, it also has the benefit of needing less physical space. The well-visited Amsterdam Passenger Terminal built in 2000 has combined multi-use horizontality in a unique way, blending innovative design with a nod to the city’s shipbuilding heritage, marking a pivotal moment in its evolution. This multipurpose terminal not only serves as a gateway for cruise passengers but also as a versatile event venue, setting a trend for ports worldwide. It stands as a compelling fusion of modern architecture on a historic waterfront, embodying a unique and dynamic purpose.
This good practice also includes objective 6.1 (Developing all types of promenades and other open spaces in City Port interface zones, to promote a better understanding of port and logistic activities) of the AIVP’s 2030 Agenda.
The Cruise Port Amsterdam has attracted over 3.8 million passengers since its inauguration in 2000, drawing visitors from all corners of the globe who seek to explore the charming Dutch capital. During its operation, Cruise Port Amsterdam has witnessed the arrival of more than 2,100 ships. These visits encompass two types of calls: transit calls and turnarounds. In turnarounds, Amsterdam serves as either the starting or ending point for the cruise passengers' journey, while transit calls involve passengers disembarking temporarily and reboarding later.
