The City-Port Interface: A Resource for Diverse Development Projects
Revising the status of port and City Port heritage to properly reflect the site’s historical significance.
How can the Port’s heritage structures be preserved?
Port-city interfaces are constantly changing. However, it is possible to establish a connection between the past and the future by identifying and preserving the aspects of the port that hold heritage or other value. To do this, it’s important to evaluate what constitutes the port’s heritage and which factors should be considered for preservation. This evaluation may encourage stakeholders to assess the benefits of preserving and reusing the port’s heritage. By doing so, they can reinforce the port’s identity and differentiate their project from other similar operations worldwide. The Port of Los Angeles reinforced this idea by creating a specific plan to assess its heritage values.
In May 2013, the Port of Los Angeles adopted an action plan for its heritage. The "Built Environment Historic, Architectural and Cultural Resource Policy" aims to promote and define priorities for preserving and reusing the Port of Los Angeles's historic, architectural, and cultural heritage. The idea was to maintain a Built Inventory, including information on the structure and whether it is already listed on a Register of Historic Resources. The Port proposed two years to survey its historical, cultural and architectural resources. Based on the findings, an action plan should be developed to identify priorities to preserve the heritage and promote its reuse wherever possible. The port authority intended to repeat the process every five years. The 2014 updated master plan also incorporated a goal to protect historic structures. It affirms that the Port should periodically review areas with historic resources for additional port-related land uses to encourage their effective reuse.
