How can the waterfront be redeveloped to benefit its activities and limit its environmental impact?
Worldwide, ports are faced with a lack of available space. One solution is the optimisation of existing port usage by reassigning physical spaces to new port functions. By creating designated zones for industrial and maritime sectors while also incorporating buffer zones and pedestrian infrastructure improvements, ports can enhance their operations while minimising environmental impact. This strategic redevelopment of the waterfront not only supports port activities but also contributes to the revitalisation of the fishing port and fosters a more sustainable urban environment for the future. The Port of Seattle’s acquisition of Salmon Bay Marina and subsequent rezoning efforts reflect this approach and a commitment to balance industrial activities with environmental preservation.
This good practice also includes objective 10.3 (Preventing the destruction of sensitive natural habitats when developing onshore or offshore port spaces and by regulating ship-generated waves) of the AIVP’s 2030 Agenda.
In December 2017, the Port of Seattle purchased Salmon Bay Marina, a two-hectare site along the Washington Ship Canal. The marina is adjacent to the Fisherman’s Terminal, the industrial part of the port. The environmental restoration work was completed, the marina activity was maintained, and small-scale industrial activities related to the fishing and maritime sectors were also allowed to set up their base there. Creating space for both activities, private and industrial moorage as well as fishing activities, without over-polluting the local environment has reflected positively and given great opportunities to the port authority of Seattle. The operation reflects a commitment by the port authorities to preserve their industrial and maritime spaces while also contributing to the redevelopment of the fishing port.
