Saint-Nazaire (France): Valorising WW2 heritage structures

Goal 6.1

Developing all types of promenades and other open spaces in City Port interface zones, to promote a better understanding of port and logistic activities.

Challenge(s)

How can old, unused heritage structures in the port be effectively highlighted?

Best Practice

The strategic use of light, colour, and materials in the architectural design of public spaces and buildings in port cities is crucial for reshaping their industrial image and showcasing historic structures. Saint-Nazaire’s port has effectively employed this approach, illuminating its WW2 heritage structures through exhibitions and public tours and integrating them into the local port city interface.

This good practice also includes objective 8.4 (Promoting the architectural and landscape integration of port facilities) of the AIVP’s 2030 Agenda.

Case Study

Saint-Nazaire's submarine base, constructed by the Nazis during World War 2, spans 301 meters and used nearly 500,000 cubic meters of concrete. Completed in just 16 months, it served as a refuge for U-boats and personnel until May 1945, situated on the historic site of the original transatlantic port.
