"Guaranteeing better representation for all stakeholders – including civil society – in City Port decision-making bodies.
How can the port improve the port city relationship in collaboration with the public?
Creating structures that allow port and urban authorities to define their requirements and redevelopment strategies is an excellent chance to compare urban and port projects and identify functional incompatibilities and technical impossibilities early on. It also opens up a dialogue with the broader community affected by the projects, including private partners and the population, which helps anticipate potential conflicts and move projects forward. Facilitating dialogue between the city and the port through joint communication is key to long-term projects. In Valencia, the port authority has three committees to discuss, analyse, and plan the port-city relationship.
This good practice also includes objective 4.1 (Guaranteeing better representation for all stakeholders – including civil society – in Port City decision-making bodies) of the AIVP’s 2030 Agenda.
Upon his appointment as President of the Port of Valencia in August 2015, Aurelio Martinez Estevez was keen to find a solution to the long-standing issue of poor communication between the Port and City. He quickly proposed creating a committee for the integration of City Port territories for the three ports and municipalities concerned: Valencia, Gandia and Sagunto.
