Vancouver (Canada): a programme to protect whales and the ecosystem

By measuring noise levels emitted by vessels and raising awareness among seafarers about the effects of their vessels on marine animals, port authorities can develop tangible measures to decrease potential threats to whales arising from shipping activities. Initiated by the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority, the ECHO Program aims to comprehend and manage the impact of shipping activities on at-risk whales in the southern coast of British Columbia. Additionally, the program involves collaboration with scientists, shipping industries, conservation groups, First Nations, and government agencies to establish objectives and implement projects focused on short-term initiatives, scientific studies, and educational efforts. Through initiatives like the WhaleReport Alert System and environmental assessments for new projects, the ECHO Program contributes to protecting marine biodiversity and promoting responsible and sustainable operations in coastal ecosystems.
