Creating Good Living Conditions: A Priority for Port Cities

How can the port’s environmental impacts be assessed and reduced?
The restrictions imposed by national and supranational environmental legislation offer an opportunity to adopt a proactive rather than a reactive approach by committing to dynamic, forward-looking environmental strategies. Before taking practical steps to monitor and manage the environmental impacts of ports, especially in port-city interface areas, these impacts need to be clearly identified and assessed. Compiling an inventory of the different types of environmental impact makes it easier to create future assessments and solutions. The Port of Valencia has several projects related to environmental strategies, such as identifying carbon footprints and improving air quality.
The environment and eco-efficiency have been central to the Port of Valencia’s development strategy for some time. They formed the core issue of its Ecoports programme and the Sympic project (“Environmental Integration of Ports and Cities”) funded by the European LIFE programme. Completed in 2007, the project allowed Valencia and its partner cities, Toulon (France) and Livorno (Italy), to develop indicators to identify responsibilities and define a joint programme of environmental actions for the Port-city interface.
