How to engage in discourses with the local community over big redevelopment projects?
To foster engaging discourses with the local community over big redevelopment projects, several strategies can be implemented. Firstly, public meetings can be held to ensure transparency between the port authority and local communities living around the waterfront. Additionally, a dedicated website can serve as an information gateway, providing progress reports, documents for consultation, and minutes of meetings. In the Port Lands initiative in Toronto, a monthly newsletter, “Update from Waterfront Toronto,” keeps stakeholders informed about project updates, consultation meetings, and invites public participation. Social media and a blog called “On the Waterfront” are also utilised to expand outreach and encourage community engagement. These initiatives aim to create space for open dialogue, feedback, and collaboration between project stakeholders and the local community, ensuring transparency and inclusivity throughout the redevelopment process.
In 2017, the Port Authority of Toronto, the Region Conservation Authority, and the city of Toronto came up with their new 2030, near-zero greenhouse gas emissions strategy and announced a multibillion-dollar redevelopment project that will take place within the boundaries of the Port of Toronto. The redevelopment project named ‘Port Lands’ aims to turn 356 hectares of a former industrial and port site into a waterfront community centre, by redirecting the Don River and reorganising the cityscape into a domestic quarter where various activities can take place. The City of Toronto is actively engaged in planning and developing the Port Lands area, aiming to transform it into a vibrant, sustainable, and resilient waterfront community.
