How can monitoring the air quality in ports improve the surrounding environment ?
Monitoring air quality in ports through technologies like E-Noses improves the surrounding environment by providing early detection of odour anomalies, identifying sources of pollution, and enhancing transparency through regular data publication. By accurately pinpointing the origins of odour complaints, E-Noses help reduce grievances directed towards port activities, fostering better community relations. Strategic placement ensures efficient monitoring while optimising resources.
This good practice also includes objective 4.4 (Developing collaborative approaches, drawing on scientific and technologic knowledge from the scientific community and civil society to support decision making) of the AIVP’s 2030 Agenda.
In 2016, the Port of Tallinn installed a network of 21 sensors known as “e-Noses” in the Port of Muuga and the Maardu sector, as seen in Figure 1, taken from the 2019 annual report. The sensors continuously analyse the ambient air in various parts of the port terminals and industrial or residential areas. E-Noses provide the port authority and industrial operators with a clearer picture of odours in and around the port zone and act as an early warning system to take measures when olfactory anomalies are detected. These anomalies can be caused by the chemicals stored or handled at the Port of Muuga. The eNose project is inspired by a similar initiative at the Port of Rotterdam (Netherlands) (Rotterdam (Netherlands): 250 sensors for a safer port - AIVP).
