Halifax (Canada): together to prepare the port for the future

Ignorance of port territories or the needs and constraints associated with port activities can result in the population having a poor understanding of projects to redevelop port/city interface areas. Faced with what is often seen as an opaque process and the risk of misunderstanding or even outright rejection, it can be useful to adopt approaches aimed at better explaining the port and its relationship with the city. In addition, citizens can be consulted and informed at regular intervals as the project progresses. These measures will ensure proper dialogue while also bringing citizens on board with the project. An inclusive approach ensures transparency, understanding, and ongoing community involvement in the management of the port territory. The Halifax Port Authority established the Port Community Liaison Committee (PCLC) in 2020 to foster communication and engagement between the port and the broader community.

This good practice also includes objective 6.4 (Providing, by any means, daily news and information on port and city life for residents, particularly young people and school students) of the AIVP’s 2030 Agenda.
