How can ports help bridge the gap between the port and the public in development projects?
By revitalising the waterfront while preserving its historical significance, projects can bridge the gap between the port and the public. Through community engagement, tourism development, and infrastructure investments, maritime activity can be integrated with public enjoyment, fostering a harmonious balance. Approved in November 2018, the Victoria Quay redevelopment in Fremantle is overseen by a steering group chaired by Minister Simone McGurk. Tasked with enhancing land use, maintaining port functionality, and improving connectivity with Fremantle’s CBD, the initiative aligns with the Westport Taskforce’s goals. The steering group’s collaborative efforts play a pivotal role in ensuring the port meets operational needs while enhancing accessibility and appeal to the public.
In November 2018, the Transport Minister approved plans to set up a steering group for the Victoria Quay redevelopment. The group is chaired by the Western Australian Government Minister Simone McGurk MLA and brings together senior officials from Fremantle Ports, Landcorp, the City of Fremantle, the Department of Transport, Chamber of Commerce, Tourism Western Australia, the Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage, Westport Taskforce, and the Department of Jobs, Tourism, Science and Innovation. The steering group, led by Fremantle MLA Simone McGurk, was tasked with examining land use in specific precincts, addressing the needs of the working port, and improving connectivity between Fremantle's central business district and Victoria Quay. The group aims to transform the waterfront area, aligning with the ongoing work of the Westport Taskforce on future port and environmental needs. The goal is to create a world-class inner-city port development while considering community desires and leveraging existing planning efforts. The transformation turned Victoria Quay into an attractive destination for locals and tourists, capitalising on its rich history and tourism potential. This is part of a bigger Westport project which wants to create a new container capacity and transfer some of the commerce activity from the Fremantle Inner Harbour to the new port located in the city of Kwinana, an action that in tandem will redevelop the port of Fremantle to keep its local, historical character and highlight it.
