How can a port assess its environmental impact?
Before practical steps can be taken to monitor and manage the environmental impacts of ports, especially in city-port interface areas, those impacts first need to be clearly identified and assessed. To assess its environmental impact, the port of San Antonio employs various sustainable planning documents, including the Sustainability Plan and the Sustainability Report. By collaborating with local businesses and implementing initiatives like the Deal for Clean Production, the port actively cleans key areas and engages with students to raise awareness, showcasing its commitment to environmentally friendly practices.
The port of San Antonio has published several documents focused on sustainable planning, including the Relationship plan with opinion leaders, the integration of the Communications Plan, the Port City Plan, the Sustainability Plan and the Sustainability Report. Concerning sustainable development, one of the key goals is the implementation of the Deal for Clean Production (APL) with the Logistic Community of San Antonio (COLSA), including 16 companies. This deal was initially developed by the national government and later translated into different sectors at a local scale, to develop sustainable and environmentally friendly terminals and socially valuable activities. Examples of these are the garbage and debris cleaning actions in the areas of Paseo Bellamar and the Maipo River mouth, key areas for the citizens and the local ecosystem. In these actions, the port collected more than 35 tons of waste in the first five months of 2019, while also engaging with young students to increase their awareness towards these issues. Their updated 2021 key sustainability indicators list shows their sustainable achievements since they adopted and signed the APL.
