How can the port collaborate with its community to jointly set sustainability targets for the port ecosystem?
By working with the businesses in the industrial port area from an early stage, it is possible to come up with a range of solutions to comply with environmental legislation. This cooperation can help those involved achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by fulfilling the planned sustainable goals on a local level. The process begins in the very first stages of a project when choosing to maintain, extend or establish industrial and port activities. One solution is to create a plan developed with all involved stakeholders. Barcelona has been developing a long-term strategy since 2016 that is updated annually to incorporate new goals.
This good practice also includes objective 4.4 (Developing collaborative approaches and drawing on scientific and technological knowledge from the scientific community and civil society to support decision-making) of the AIVP’s 2030 Agenda.
In 2016, the Port of Barcelona began work on a Sectoral Sustainable Development Plan, based on the “Port of Barcelona’s Strategic Plan 2016-2020”, in conjunction with representatives from every sector of the logistics and port community and interest groups. After consulting the stakeholders, discussions took place to identify the indicators that would be used for the sectoral plan based on the Global Reporting Initiative Guide.
