Riga (Latvia): The port acts to protect bird life

Over time, the development of urban, port, or agricultural sites causes major changes to their original natural environments, resulting in significant artificialisation. In order to reconcile the expansion of port activities with the need to take responsibility for/mitigate their impact on biodiversity, a long-term strategy must be adopted by implementing biodiversity conservation plans. In addition to their traditional role as developers and land owners, port authorities have a part to play in this process, with wider responsibility as managers of the sites and spaces they occupy. The port of Riga is aware of and monitoring species to guarantee their livability.

This good practice also includes objective 10.2 (Conducting regular biodiversity surveys in the Port City territory and publishing the findings) of the AIVP’s 2030 Agenda.
