How can the port communicate with civil society about large-scale developments?
Clear and tangible communication can bring a project to life and help dispel the public’s impression of inertia in the port. Whether or not they are predictable or controllable, the difficulties encountered during large-scale development projects are numerous. These can make it hard for the population to foresee the completed product. For this reason, creative communication methods are essential to make everyone aware of the different steps of a project. In Bremen, an information centre showcases the port’s past and future.
This good practice also includes objective 4.1 (Guaranteeing better representation for all stakeholders – including civil society – in City Port decision-making bodies) of the AIVP’s 2030 Agenda.
Since the 2000s, the former dock district of this Hanseatic city has been attracting attention for its need for redevelopment. As a result, the western districts of the city of Bremen have been mobilised to develop a new ‘Uberseestadt’ neighborhood. In this context, public-private partnerships were established. Bremeninvest commissioned Bremen's Senator for Economy, Employment and Ports to improve infrastructure and market commercial and residential property. This operation aims to revitalise the area by helping businesses to set up there and by creating a new urban fabric to give life to this new district.
