:The Antwerp Port Authority is an independent, municipally-owned company. It is responsible for planning, development, modernization and maintenance of the port infrastructure. The Antwerp Port Authority is also responsible for safe and smooth shipping movements within the dock complex, and operates the bridges and locks. Finally, it aims to play a pioneering role in sustainable port development. In 2018 the Port of Antwerp handled 235 million tonnes of international maritime cargo. This makes Antwerp the second largest port in Europe. It is a multipurpose port with a high productivity rate. Besides containers, Antwerp is a market leader in steel, project cargo and fruit, it also plays a key role in Ro/Ro traffic, coffee, tobacco and dry and liquid bulk. The extensive storage capacity and the presence of the largest integrated chemical cluster in Europe make the Port of Antwerp an essential maritime, logistics and industrial cluster in Europe. The new headquarters (designed by Zaha Hadid Architects) opened on 22 September 2016. The City of Antwerp (527.461 inhabitants) is the largest city in Flanders, situated in the northern part of Belgium on the River Scheldt. It’s the home of Rubens, diamond trade, fashion designers and trendsetters. Antwerp’s port is one of the biggest in the world, ranking second in Europe and within the top 20 globally. Therefore, Antwerp is considered the economical heart of Flanders, Belgium. Because of its location on the European TEN-T network it faces major challenges in the field of mobility, spatial development, air pollution, health and environment. The city of Antwerp tries to be a frontrunner in Europe in all of these areas. The city has signed in the Covenant of Mayors.
