Stretching over 842 metres and concealed within the quay, the barrier, which was first tested on September 14, will rise only when water levels become too high, thus protecting the Flemish metropolis from floods without hindering its connection to the Scheldt River. The barrier is part of the Scheldt Quays Master Plan, which will transform seven kilometres of waterfront from Dry Dock Island to Blue Gate Antwerp, including gardens and a sunbathing area near the moving dam. The renovation of the Scheldt quays is itself part of Flanders\u2019 Sigma Plan for flood defence.
