Biofouling, or the undesirable build-up of microorganisms, plants, algae and animals on a ship\u2019s underwater surfaces like its hull, is a major contributor to invasive species and can impact vessels\u2019 fuel efficiency. The pilot, once approved and upscaled, is meant to provide maritime transport lines and cruise operators with confidence to operate in New Zealand waters while maintaining biosecurity and helping preserve the country\u2019s marine environment. The solution will decrease the need to clean vessels offshore, facilitating access to the Port.
