The Oslo City Council and Port Authority of Oslo co-developed a strategy for highlighting heritage structures in developing older port areas into urban spaces while allowing the port to expand. The <\/span>Fjord City project<\/span><\/a><\/span> launched in 2000, entails an urban renewal project concerning the waterfront areas of Oslo. The first plan was drafted in 2000 by the Oslo city council and the Oslo port authorities initiated the work in 2008. The goal of this urban renewal project was to <\/span>preserve the maritime cultural heritage, resulting in a detailed survey of all the elements of heritage, with historical or scenic value and prompting the transformation of the port to a more sustainable waterfront. While heritage is a big aspect of this urban renewal project is important, the redevelopment of the waterfront goes further than just preserving the heritage structures of the waterfront, by incorporating them in a well-designed interface where the public can easily access and move around.<\/span><\/p>\n

For this reason, the Port of Oslo developed in 2010 its <\/span>aesthetic guidelines<\/span><\/a><\/span> for the port facilities. Some key measures include protecting the visual axes, developing green elements in different sites and lighting schemes, and using specific materials and colours. The general principle is that the aesthetic value of the port may be in the logistics activity itself and that it is worth showing it to citizens. In this case, the buffer areas are seen as transitional zones for the port activities and not as a screen that hides those same activities. Promenades, specifically in the form of minimally designed walkways, can be used to regenerate the waterfront and to reconnect the city with its port. Based on this principle, it is proposed to create viewpoints on the port and expand its transparency. In Oslo, it is also worth exploring the Oslo Havn Promenade, where the cultural value of the port is explained in an innovative public space.<\/span><\/p>\n

A great example of this redesigning project is Rådhusbrygge 2<\/a>, part of Oslo’s port, which was voted as Norway’s “Best Outdoor Urban Space” in 2019. This space was used as the main case study for the development of the aesthetic guidelines developed by the port.<\/span><\/p>\n

With this urban renewal project, the port and city of Oslo have tried to give attention to the port by highlighting older structures and by relocating some port activities, as this is the goal of the Fjord City project. To highlight such areas, an aesthetic guideline needed to be established by the port authority of Oslo to reach this goal as best as possible. This project is part of <\/span>Oslo’s 2030 Agenda<\/span><\/a><\/span>, which follows the 17 UN SDGs, focused on creating a sustainable city.<\/span><\/p>\n
