Managing the growth of the urban, port, or agricultural areas requires a proactive long-term strategy to balance development with preserving biodiversity amidst the significant artificialisation of the natural landscape. Coastal regions are described as fragile due to rapid and extreme temperature changes and human exploitation. Human activities can have an extreme impact on coastal ecosystems, such as mangroves, corals, and seawater meadows and therefore, measures to protect, conserve, and restore these ecosystems are vital. The port of Guadeloupe launched the Cáyoli project to protect essential areas of local biodiversity and endangered landscapes after observing human activities’ impact on them. <\/span><\/p>\n

Case Description:<\/span><\/p>\n

In 2013, <\/span>Guadeloupe Port<\/span><\/a><\/span> Caraïbes acquired the status of a Grand Port Maritime, expanding its role as a developer and manager of natural areas within its jurisdiction. The port embraced these new responsibilities, leading to the establishment of the <\/span>Cáyoli program<\/span><\/a><\/span>. Cáyoli is an environmental initiative driven by a spirit of collaboration, aiming to develop and implement practical solutions for restoring <\/span>coastal island ecosystems<\/span><\/a><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Cáyoli program was officially launched in <\/span>June 2016<\/span><\/a><\/span>. Prior to its implementation, Guadeloupe Port Caraïbes’ Environmental Department dedicated several years to enhancing its understanding of the natural areas within its port district. This effort included studies related to the impact of the <\/span>New Generation Port project<\/span><\/a><\/span> and provided support to environmental associations through technical and financial means. <\/span>The Cáyoli plan is prepared for the short, medium, and long term.<\/span><\/a><\/span> The first two years were dedicated to scientific research and strict action protocols to restore and manage the chosen ecosystems. Specifically, the research focused on formulating scientifically sound protocols for the management and active restoration of the targeted natural environments. The concrete actions are organised in 5 typologies: active environmental restoration, educational program, infrastructure optimisation, eco site surveillance and valorisation, and ecotourism. The budget of the plan was 6 million euros for 3 key areas: Petit-Cul-de Sac Marin, Folle Anse à Marie-Galante, and Basse-Terre. The main actions developed since 2016 are mangrove and coral nurseries, restoration of nesting areas for different species, and sensitisation campaigns with students. <\/span><\/p>\n

While promoting the conservation of the landscape, the Cáyoli project was considered an ambitious educational program in partnership with the Rectorate of Guadeloupe. This was because it aimed to equip teachers with tools tailored to the Caribbean Island context, which will inspire the development of local expertise in environmental protection and restoration.<\/span><\/p>\n
