San Francisco’s built heritage has been renovated and refurbished since the 1960s. Over the last fifty years, converting lofts into warehouses has become a common practice. However, since the early 2000s, sustainable architecture has become a priority for the city. This is evident in buildings such as the warehouse on Pier 1 and the Exploratorium Museum on Pier 15\/17, which use water from the bay to power their air-conditioning system. Both warehouses utilised their location over the sea to submerge the heat exchanger, creating a geothermal system. This solution also helped redevelopment to meet the historical conservation requirements, as it was not possible to install cooling towers. <\/span><\/p>\n

The system was first installed on <\/span>Pier 1 in 2001<\/a> when the warehouse was retrofitted for office use. It was an innovation never before done in a maritime environment, requiring the F+K firm to base the design on previous experiences in lake regions. A heated floor system distributes the heating throughout the building. This system differs from the Exploratorium Museum, where the heat\/cool air is distributed through ceiling pipes.<\/a> At the Museum, the system works on a closed loop using eight 50-ton water-to-water heat pumps to raise or lower the temperature. The building uses the system almost 75% of the time and saves more than 2 million gallons of potable water annually, helping the goal of being net zero. In 2014, the building was awarded the LEED Platinum certification<\/a>, and in 2023, it achieved the goal of becoming the largest net-zero energy use museum in the U.S<\/a>. Furthermore, this goal is in line with San Francisco’s goal of using only energy generated from renewable sources by 2020.<\/span><\/p>\n
