The warehouse was built in 1912 in the northern sector of the San Francisco waterfront. It was part of the US Army&rsquo;s Fort Mason, a facility that for nearly 50 years served as an embarkation port for military personnel bound for the Pacific.&nbsp;During World War II, it served as all of America&rsquo;s other military ports combined in the months after the USA entered the conflict.&nbsp;The US Army closed Fort Mason in the 1960s, and its ownership was transferred to the National Park Service&nbsp;(NPS)&nbsp;in 1972.&nbsp;In 1977, a non-profit organisation, the Fort Mason Center, was created&nbsp;to turn the buildings into an arts centre.&nbsp;Since then, the Center has hosted exhibitions and events, such <a href=\"https:\/\/fortmason.org\/resident\/museo-italo-americano\/\">the Museo Italo Americano<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/fortmason.org\/resident\/magic-theatre\/\">The Magic Theater<\/a>, Tech events, and the UN Environmental Day of 2005.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">However, by 2003, the shed at Pier 2 was severely damaged,&nbsp;with cracks in the concrete and corrosion of the metallic window frames, steel columns, etc. The NPS also had to reinforce the dock foundations and pillars to withstand earthquake risks, a task completed in 2006. The warehouse is part of the National Historic Landmark District and is covered by the NPS&rsquo;s Golden Gate National Recreation Area rules.&nbsp;To obtain funding, all of the repairs and changes made needed to comply with the renovation standards imposed by the Department of the Interior and could&nbsp;not alter the building&rsquo;s historic character. However, after extensive negotiations between the <\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lmsarch.com\/studio\/stories\/none\/armed-forces-arts-enthusiasts-fort-mason-centers-pier-2\">LMSA Architecture Firm<\/a> and NPS, it was possible to include PV panels that keep the original industrial characteristics but meet the NPS&rsquo;s sustainability guidelines and the LEED standards. The renovation, concluded in 2014, also included an economical heating\/cooling system, radiant floor heating, enhanced building insulation, and high-efficiency lighting. The southern part of the warehouse is earmarked to become an exhibition hall, the Herbst Pavilion. The northern part will then become a 437-seat venue, the Cowell Theatre.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">Fort Mason Center for Arts &amp; Culture is a popular destination that hosts a variety of cultural events and offers art classes and teaching programs. Every year, over 1.2 million people visit the Center to experience its diverse range of activities. In addition, the Center is home to nearly two dozen non-profit and arts organisations that receive annual support.
