This is achieved through&nbsp;specialist committees, awareness-raising events and by active involvement and support for events organised at the port, waterfront and in the Bay of San Diego. One of the key measures is the <\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.portofsandiego.org\/experiences\/tidelands-activation-programs-tap\">Tidelands Activation Program<\/a> (TAP), an annual programme of support and funding for cultural, sports, and recreational events of all sizes. The main aim is to make&nbsp;the San Diego waterfront a cultural and arts destination for visitors and&nbsp;residents of the five towns and cities on the Bay.&nbsp;The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.portofsandiego.org\/experiences\/parks-recreation\">Parks &amp; Recreation Department<\/a> was set up specially to oversee the programme, manage the schedule of cultural and arts activities, and direct policy on acquisitions of temporary or permanent artworks.&nbsp;The Department is advised by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.portofsandiego.org\/people\/other-public-meetings\/arts-culture-design-committee\">Arts, Culture &amp; Design Committee<\/a> to create a bridge with the Board of Port Commissioners.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">Meanwhile, the Tidelands Activation Program Advisory Committee works to assess and select projects for the programme. For instance, in 2017, a total of 83 events received support. Moreover, <\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.portofsandiego.org\/see-and-do\/art-tidelands\">six self-guided tours<\/a> of the art installations on the waterfront can be explored on&nbsp;the port&rsquo;s site. The annual budget of TAP varies, and for the 2017\/2018 fiscal year, it totalled $726,500. From July 2019 to July 2020, the port of San Diego sponsored&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/timesofsandiego.com\/politics\/2019\/07\/03\/port-of-san-diego-to-sponsor-64-public-waterfront-events-over-next-12-months\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">64 public events&nbsp;<\/a>on the waterfront through its Tidelands Activation Program. The program distributed $430,000 in funding and $1,1 million in services to bring the people to the waterfront and discover port areas and public spaces. This proactive, community-oriented policy earned the Port of San Diego two distinctions in 2017: the National Environmental Excellence Award for Public Involvement and the Silver Bernays Award of Excellence for Community Relations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">For 2024, the TAP added a new category called Expanded Access Program, paying attention to underused parks along San Diego Bay. In September 2023, Parks &amp; Recreation staff held six community meetings to discuss the program. The aim was to identify the characteristics of special events, including the type of event that the residents wanted the Port to sponsor. The results of the survey revealed an interest in a multicultural festival in Spring 2024.
