The goal was to improve the quality of life for residents and workers and show that community and industrial interests can coexist through careful planning and design. During the planning phase, five key initiatives were identified as top priorities, and the Hunts Point Landing was a significant component of the master plan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">The <a href=\"file:\/\/\/D:\/https:\/hrnerr.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/HuntsPoint_CaseStudy_FINAL2.pdf\">Hunt&#8217;s Point waterfront<\/a> experienced heavy industrialisation in the 21st century, which resulted in minimal green spaces for the local community. To address this demand for more public recreational spaces, the South Bronx Greenway initiative was launched, led by the New York City Economic Development Corporation. The initiative developed land for parks and recreation, including an unused parcel at Farragut Street along the East River shoreline. This area was previously home to a coal gasification plant, making it an ideal location for improvement with dense greenery. Known as Hunt&#8217;s Point Landing, the project aimed to enhance habitat and recreational access, specifically focusing on the shoreline.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">The designers prioritised the shoreline&#8217;s design to accommodate the migration of tidal salt marsh species in response to sea level rise scenarios. The park&#8217;s slope is designed with native vegetation, facilitating water access for recreation at any tidal stage. It includes a fishing pier, a viewpoint, a quay for kayaks and canoes to launch and a natural shoreline that serves as an educational space. The restoration efforts also accommodated typical species like oysters, allowing them to reclaim their habitat. Moreover, designers integrated stormwater management techniques to mitigate stormwater flow into the river. The runoff water flows into a pool in the park, where it is biofiltered before running back into the East River.
