To improve the connection and ease traffic congestion, a tunnel was constructed in 2010 and inaugurated in 2014.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fhwa.dot.gov\/ipd\/project_profiles\/fl_port_miami_tunnel.aspx\"> The tunnel<\/a> directly links two highways, the cargo and cruise ship ports on Dodge Island, and opens the way for new developments in the northern part of Miami&#8217;s business district (CBD). The waterfront of Dodge Island also benefits from the development. The tunnel was built by a public-private partnership between the State of Florida, the Miami Access Tunnel (MAT) Consortium, on behalf of the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), Miami-Dade County, and the city of Miami.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">It was estimated in 2022 that since the tunnel&rsquo;s opening, it has removed about 80% of the trucks moving to the port from Miami&#8217;s city centre. Moreover, traffic inside the tunnel increased by around 265%. All this traffic requires huge maintenance operations to keep the tunnel open. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.miamitodaynews.com\/2022\/08\/02\/portmiami-tunnel-blazes-trail-to-future\/\">MiamiToday<\/a>, the structure has infrared, vibration and air quality sensors, 105 roadway CCTV, 40 hose valve cabinets, 44 jet fans, and 22 incident management plans.
