In <\/span>December 2017<\/span><\/a><\/span>, the <\/span>Port of Seattle<\/span><\/a><\/span> purchased <\/span>Salmon Bay Marina<\/span><\/a><\/span>, a two-hectare site along the Washington Ship Canal. The marina is adjacent to the Fisherman’s Terminal, the industrial part of the port. The environmental restoration work was completed, the marina activity was maintained, and small-scale industrial activities related to the fishing and maritime sectors were also allowed to set up their base there. Creating space for both activities, private and industrial moorage as well as fishing activities, without over-polluting the local environment has reflected positively and given great opportunities to the port authority of Seattle. The operation reflects a commitment by the port authorities to preserve their industrial and maritime spaces while also contributing to the redevelopment of the fishing port.<\/span><\/p>\n

After this important purchase by the port authority, stakeholders decided to <\/span>reorganise the zoning<\/span><\/a><\/span> of the Seattle port to further promote port activities and reduce the impact on the environment during the summer of 2023. The <\/span>rezoning plan<\/span><\/a><\/span>, announced officially in July of 2023, introduced new zones to better organise industrial areas, protect existing industrial spaces, and create buffer zones between industry and residential\/commercial areas. By encouraging denser industrial development and restricting non-industrial uses in designated zones, the plan aims to maintain the viability of industrial lands while improving pedestrian infrastructure and allowing for affordable housing for industrial workers. This strategy helps ensure that the port and industrial areas can operate effectively without interference from incompatible uses, while also fostering a more balanced and sustainable urban environment.<\/span><\/p>\n
