{"id":22628,"date":"2026-04-02T14:32:50","date_gmt":"2026-04-02T12:32:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/localhost:8000\/bonnes-pratiques\/bellingham-usa-wa-an-educational-heritage-trail\/"},"modified":"2026-09-12T13:45:24","modified_gmt":"2026-09-12T11:45:24","slug":"bellingham-usa-wa-an-educational-heritage-trail","status":"publish","type":"bonnes-pratiques","link":"https:\/\/aivp.org\/en\/best-practices\/bellingham-usa-wa-an-educational-heritage-trail\/","title":{"rendered":"Bellingham (USA, WA): An educational heritage trail"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">The Port and the City of Bellingham are in partnership to develop a heritage trail, part of the 50-year development plan for redeveloping the 237-acre <a href=\"https:\/\/www.portofbellingham.com\/524\/Waterfront-District\">Bellingham&#8217;s waterfront district.<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.portofbellingham.com\/DocumentCenter\/View\/7683\/Bellingham_Heritage-Trail-Concept-Plan_20180430\">The Heritage Trail Concept Plan<\/a> was developed by Walker Macy and Aldrichpears Associates, whose recommendations were based on a detailed inventory of uses, heritage value and historical context of the different buildings and elements of interest at the site. The trail will also reconnect this central waterfront area of Bellingham with other parts of the city, such as the Old Town and downtown areas, and several parks, including the Maritime Heritage Park, which focuses on the environmental history of Whatcom Creek. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">In 2019, the port concluded the restoration of the Granary Building and Waypoint Park, which will serve as the trail&#8217;s departure point. The park also houses the &#8220;Acid Ball,&#8221; an industrial artefact built around 1938. The next part under development is the project for the 1940s Boardmill Building. The port opened a call for investors in 2022, and The BoardMill Group Inc. was selected to transform the complex into a hotel, residence area, and public space.
