In December 2013,<\/span> Luka Koper<\/a>, Port of Koper, implemented a waste management strategy to minimise the environmental impact caused by port activities. Their approach follows the circular model, which is based on utilising resources rather than creating waste. This approach, named “no waste, just resources”, earned the Koper Port an ESPO award in 2014.<\/a> Several circular economy initiatives were presented under this project: the use of paper mill sludge as an anti-dusting agent, the introduction of a heating system using the recycled wood, composting plant and the reuse of marine silt as a construction material. <\/span><\/p>\n

The main problem was caused by the coal and mineral terminal and the dust it produced. The solution involves reusing waste from the paper industry, which is sprayed on the heap of coal and minerals and then dries, creating a protective crust. The quality of the coal and mineral is unaffected by this process, and the system confirmed its efficacy even in windy conditions with gusts exceeding 100 km\/h. It replaces the more traditional spraying techniques while saving some 3000 m3 of water annually. Furthermore, <\/span>10.000 m2 of coal depot has been asphalted to additionally reduce dusting and allow easier cleaning of the surface. Additionally, another line of conveyor belts was installed at the depot, thus enabling the reduction of machinery transport across the depot and consequently minor dust. Monthly measurements of dust deposits are made at ten locations within the port zone. <\/span><\/p>\n

The port also has the initiative “<\/span>Living with port<\/a>“, a portal where the population can easily track dust and noise pollution. According to the portal<\/a>, the dust levels never exceed the legally prescribed limit values, and it is lower than in other cities in Slovenia.<\/span><\/p>\n
