Completed in 2022, Dane’s Yard is a creative quarter designed by Waugh Thistleton Architects<\/a> at Three Mills, part of the Sugar House Island<\/a> development in London’s East End. The Island has a rich historical background moulded by the watercourses surrounding it.<\/p>\n

In the Domesday Book of 1086, eight tidal mills in the Stratford area were recorded, making the River Lea’s mills among the earliest tidal mills ever documented in England. These mills served as the circular economy hub, offering employment opportunities for mill operators, carpenters, and coopers. Initially, the mills produced flour for the local bakers of Stratford. However, in the 18th century, they began distilling gin, and the gin mash was used to feed large pig farms. The bones of these pigs were utilised in the China factories at Bow, while local soap makers used their fat and closing the loops.<\/p>\n

The project design respects the rich local heritage, which includes the tide mills on the edge of the Lea River, and the Sugar House itself, a brick warehouse dating from the 19th century. It combines new constructions and the reuse of existing historic buildings. Moreover, the new buildings have been designed to reflect the site’s industrial character. They are low-rise, with clear forms. Brickwork has been used extensively to create a site-wide language, with variations in colour and detailing to provide character and interest. One of the historical buildings served as a printing ink manufacturer’s warehouse for over 150 years. The former Victorian warehouse is now called “The Talent House<\/a>”, which houses recording facilities and dance studios. Dane’s yard is the first phase of the masterplan development. It comprises eight buildings with 9,000 m2 of office spaces for creative industries and 1,200 m2 of public open space. <\/p>\n

The project is part of a mixed-use programme with 26 hectares of the Sugar Island site, including 1200 residential units, almost 58,000 m2 of offices, gardens and a riverside park, a hotel, shops, etc. The site is also close to 3 Mills Studios, where a number of television and cinema productions have been filmed (including Wes Anderson’s movie, Isle of Dogs).<\/p>\n
