The <\/span>Alblasserdam BCTN Container Transferium<\/span><\/a><\/span> was officially opened on 28 May 2015. The project aimed to optimise links with the Maasvlakte terminal containers, which could previously only be reached by truck on the already congested A15 motorway. It was hoped that the number of trucks using the A15 could be cut by about 180,000 a year, with daily transfers to river routes. In 2017, over 750 containers per week passed through the Alblasserdam interior terminal. In 2021 it was reported that about <\/span>100.000 units<\/span><\/a><\/span> had passed through the corridor within the year. In 2023, CEO Joop Mijland estimated that the locations of BCTN transported about <\/span>500.000 containers<\/span><\/a><\/span> a year. The new solution allows for faster, cleaner transport, thanks to the use of river routes and also because the facilities themselves use green technologies, such as electric cranes, cold ironing, sustainable lighting, and noise mitigation measures. The project was financed in part by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Environment and by the Province of South Holland.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Container Transferium played a pivotal role within a broader collaboration involving chain corridors. This collaboration transformed the transportation landscape by shifting from reliance on heavy vehicles like trucks to utilizing large river vessels. The primary objective was to transport containers more efficiently to their final destinations. This transition brought about more than just a reduction in the usage of motorways like A15. The vessels employed by the BCTN company for transporting containers have adopted a hybrid-electric propulsion system instead of conventional diesel engines. These vessels navigate through the corridors maintained by BCTN, including the Alblasserdam terminal, during their outbound and return journeys. BCTN, in collaboration with the Municipality of Alblasserdam, the Port of Rotterdam Authority, Zero Emission Services (ZES), and other partners, is actively working towards establishing a new charging infrastructure specifically designed for battery containers. In time, this infrastructure will enable BCTN’s fleet, currently reliant on a hybrid propulsion system, to transition to full electric power. Furthermore, BCTN is actively involved in the development of the MSC Maas, a hydrogen-powered vessel that is scheduled to be deployed on the company’s Rotterdam route by the end of 2021.<\/span><\/p>\n

In 2017, the Port of Rotterdam calculated the savings generated by the Transferium for one of its users, Van Sillevoldt Rijst, a rice processing plant. It was estimated that using river transport via the Transferium cut CO2 emissions by 411,000 kg for the 5,100 containers that would otherwise have had to transit via the A15. Opened in April 2018, the Maasvlakte Transferium was designed with a similar approach, but this time for public transport, in particular for the 7,000 people working in the fifty or so businesses in the port’s western zone.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Alblasserdam BCTN Container Transferium stands as an example of sustainable logistics transformation. By optimizing container transport, this initiative not only reduces the burden on congested roadways but also actively promotes cleaner and more efficient transportation using river routes. The collaboration between BCTN, government bodies, and industry partners demonstrates a commitment to environmentally friendly practices, with the electrification of container transport and the development of hydrogen-powered vessels on the horizon. This approach not only benefits the environment but also enhances the overall logistics landscape. With similar concepts like the Maasvlakte Transferium, it’s evident that this model has the potential to shape the future of cargo transport by significantly cutting carbon emissions and contributing to a more sustainable urban and port interface.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
