The Cruise Port Amsterdam<\/span><\/a><\/span> has attracted over 3.8 million passengers since its inauguration in 2000, drawing visitors from all corners of the globe who seek to explore the charming Dutch capital. During its operation, Cruise Port Amsterdam has witnessed the arrival of more than 2,100 ships. These visits encompass two types of calls: transit calls and turnarounds. In turnarounds, Amsterdam serves as either the starting or ending point for the cruise passengers’ journey, while transit calls involve passengers disembarking temporarily and reboarding later.<\/span><\/p>\n

The history of Cruise Port Amsterdam dates back to 1875 when the terminal was established on the southern banks of the IJ River in Amsterdam. This area has long been associated with the maritime industry, with the construction of a two-kilometre-long island to accommodate the growing number of ocean steamers. Majestic buildings and large sheds were erected, and the area was named Oostelijke Handelskade. In 1970, one of the sheds was converted into a passenger terminal, and as the cruise ships grew in size, the cruise industry began to play a significant role in Amsterdam’s economy.<\/span><\/p>\n

To further support the growing demand, a new terminal named <\/span>Passenger Terminal Amsterdam<\/span><\/a><\/span> <\/span>started construction in 1997. Architect Larry Malcic designed the building to symbolise the connection between land and water. The undulating shape of the roof represents this connection, while the immense wooden beams inside pay homage to the city’s shipbuilding heritage. The abundant use of glass provides breathtaking views of the IJ Harbour and the city centre.<\/span><\/p>\n

In March 2000, the terminal became the first multipurpose terminal in Europe, serving not only as a passenger terminal but also as a unique venue for hosting events. This successful combination has since been adopted in various ports worldwide. Passenger Terminal Amsterdam stands as a testament to striking modern architecture on historical grounds, serving a distinctive purpose.<\/span><\/p>\n
