In 2012, the city of Auckland received a master plan for its Waterfront. Along with the 10km of new promenades, a new city waterfront neighbourhood was developed at the Wynyard Quarter.<\/a> The area began its transformation in 2011 when 500m of new public space transforming it from an industrial area closed off to the public amid the Rugby World Cup. By 2018, the area started to receive new residents, and the final phase of development started in 2022 and is expected to end by 2025.<\/p>\n

However, for the authorities responsible for Waterfront Auckland, it was not enough to create new buildings and organise events to attract the population to this formerly private site. A global strategy was needed in order to create a common identity shared by the entire community and to encourage the population to take ownership of the site. Since 2011, a dedicated website<\/a>, a Facebook page<\/a> and a newsletter have gathered an ongoing annual programme of social, cultural and business events in the different waterfront areas.<\/p>\n

Since 2011, the Wynyard Quarter has hosted activities under programmes such as “Workshops on the Wharf<\/a>” aimed at a child audience, the “Silo Cinema<\/a>“, the “Park Markets”, and “The Auckland Arts Festival<\/a>“. Over the summer period, around 50 events are held in the public spaces developed near the former concrete silos that have been retained (Silo Park<\/a>), including open-air screenings and exhibitions.<\/p>\n
