The <\/span>Auckland Plan 2050<\/span><\/a><\/span>, with its vision of becoming the world’s most liveable city, strongly emphasises sustainable urban development that supports this population growth while maintaining safe and healthy communities.<\/span><\/p>\n

Central to realising this vision is <\/span>Water-Sensitive Design (WSD),<\/span><\/a><\/span> which aligns land use planning with ecosystem services essential for supporting development. Ecosystem services encompass the benefits derived from nature, spanning provisioning, regulating, cultural, and supporting functions. This equilibrium between land development and ecosystem services safeguards the resilience of Auckland’s environment, particularly its harbours and watercourses.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Water-Sensitive Design is the rationale behind the rain gardens located on a 600 m² plot in Jellicoe Street, a pedestrian street in the Wynyard Quarter (North Wharf Promenade and Silo Park). The gardens include native vegetation and drain runoff water from 9000 m² of local roads and land. They also filter rainwater, particularly stormwater, reduce contaminants dumped at sea and irrigate urban vegetation.<\/span><\/p>\n

WSD involves a multidisciplinary approach that integrates stormwater management with site ecology, urban design best practices, and community values. It aims to yield multiple public benefits from stormwater management, establish a unique sense of place within communities, and offer land developers lower risks and improved returns on investment.<\/span><\/p>\n

High-quality street furniture and a sculpture by Michio Ihara, <\/span>Wind Tree<\/span><\/a>, have made the area a pleasant urban space that is popular with residents.<\/span><\/p>\n

After the success of this program, <\/span>Wellington<\/span><\/a> (New Zealand) has started adopting the same principles of Water-Sensitive Design. Water-sensitive design aligns with New Zealand’s <\/span>Principles from Te Ao M\u0101ori, the M\u0101ori worldview<\/span><\/a>, as published by the Ministry of Business, Innovation, and Employment. <\/span><\/p>\n
