Powerhouse Brattørkaia<\/span><\/a><\/span>, a positive energy building, was officially opened on Trondheim’s waterfront on August 30th, 2019. Its designer, Snøhetta, has combined various solutions for the new office building: choice of construction materials, building orientation, solar panels, heat recovery, wastewater, seawater use, natural light, etc. The building generates renewable energy to cover its own needs, while also supplying power to neighbouring buildings, electric buses, boats and cars via a local micro-grid. The structure won the “Fast Company Innovation” award in the 2020 Design Awards in the sustainability category.<\/span><\/p>\n

The building generates twice as much energy as it consumes daily, totalling about 500,000 kWh of clean, renewable energy every day. Essentially, the building serves a dual purpose as a miniaturised power plant situated within the city. Looking ahead to future advancements in technology, the building’s design incorporates generous space for energy storage. This enables the building to accumulate excess energy during the summer months when daylight is abundant and subsequently utilise it during the winter months when daylight is scarce. Powerhouse Brattørkaia received the BREEAM Outstanding certification, bringing the sustainable goals of Norway closer to their goal, as signed in <\/span>the UNFCCC Paris Agreement.<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

The structure is a physical manifestation of how the adoption of simple sustainable solutions can create a unique structure and also a long-term solution to the energy problem and climate change. The incorporation of different bioclimatic concepts, such as the building orientation, solar panels and seawater usage to name a few examples, creates a sustainable structure that works for the climate and the local community.<\/p>\n
