In 2012<\/a>, the Freeport of Riga Authority started moving port facilities away from the city centre. As part of the movement, the coal facilities were relocated to a new terminal on Krievu Island. Various measures <\/a>were taken to prevent coal dust from being dispersed into the air and minimise the environmental impact on the neighbouring districts of Krievu. First, all wagon unloading takes place inside a closed room and is poured into underground reservoirs with the help of specialised machines. Then, when the coal needs to be transferred, a closed conveyor line is in place to feed the ship or storage areas. Finally, the coal storage areas are continuously sprayed using special snow cannons in winter or with water sprinklers during warmer periods. <\/span><\/p>\n

The port authority provides measurements of particulate matter (dust) and volatile organic compounds in the port territory. During the last decade, four dust monitoring stations have been installed in the port area. Two of them operate in the coal transshipment area on Krievu Island near the cargo handling sites, and two were installed in the immediate vicinity of residential areas, in Bolder\u0101ja at 1G St\u016brma\u0146u Street and in Vecm\u012blgr\u0101vis at 5A Meldru Street. The air monitoring stations operate in real-time and continuously transmit their measurement data, which is accessible online to port units and to the State Environmental Service. Surveillance cameras were also installed at the most active coal transshipment locations so that the public can follow the loading process and air quality indices online.<\/span><\/p>\n

Moreover, in 2018, a 2km long, 23m high<\/span> windbreak<\/a> was constructed to prevent coal dust from spreading by wind. These barriers were awarded the 14th annual Riga Architectural Prize<\/a> in October 2019. According to the Gvido Princis<\/a>, Architect for the City of Riga, the award is to showcase how the port is developing with the urban environment and is working for risk reduction and prevention. <\/span><\/p>\n
